What Are the Best Tattoo Design Conventions?

There are thousands of different types of conventions across the world. Anime conventions, electronics conventions – everything in the world seems to have a convention of its own, and tattoo designs are no different.

The tattoo art form is unique, in that there are really two ways that tattoos work as an artistic design:

How aesthetically attractive/meaningful the tattoo design is.
How that design manages to enhance the beauty of those that wear it.

This is different than most other types of art. A beautiful painting is going to look beautiful whether it is in the middle of an incredible gallery or sitting above a urinal, because neither of those affect the painting itself. But tattoos are completely different. An amazing tattoo design that looks fantastic on the lower back of a young woman may easily look awful on the inner thigh of a seventy year old man. Is the nature of tattoos that the design itself is only part of the art form, as how the design looks on the body is the key to what makes a truly great tattoo design.

It is with that in mind that tattoo design showcases are such an unique type of convention that differs from most of the others. In general, conventions show you something new, and you look at it and judge how interesting it is. But with tattoos, you get to look at amazing tattoo artwork, and picture how well (or how poorly) that artwork will complement your body. For true tat lovers, this makes the experience far more meaningful than those you would get at other convetions.

Tattoo Design Conventions

There are dozens of different conventions across the world. Some of the most well known conventions include:

Assen Tattoo Convention (in the Netherlands)
Needle Art Tattoo Convention (also in the Netherlands).

However, perhaps the most interesting new convention is that of the Singapore Tattoo Design Showcase. The Singapore Tattoo design showcase (Recently renamed the Singapore Tat2 Design Show) is a relatively new convention, as it has only been around for a few years. However, this past year featured a number of interesting activities, including:

Tattoo Contests
Live Tattooing
Singapore Cultural Performances
Trade Seminars
Showcases of Both Local and Worldwide Tattoos

The Singapore Tattoo Design Showcase’s best feature is its location. As with most tattoo conventions, the content does not really differ greatly between conventions. Many of the same worldwide recognized best tattoo design artists attend all of these conventions. However, the Singapore Tattoo Design Showcase has the added benefit of Singapore cultural activities, as well as Singapore inspired tat designs. For many of those that reside in the West, gaining access to this type of cultural experience is something that you will not get from any other showcase – including the conventions in other countries, as these areas have been influenced so highly by American and European tattoo designs that their content is less unique.

The Singapore Tattoo Design Showcase/Singapore Tat2 Design Show may not be spectacularly different than the other conventions it competes with, but the added cultural aspect of the showcase makes it the best tattoo design convention available.
